APERÇU
After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Evaluate the stability and buckling behaviour of steel components under various loading conditions
- Design and assess the performance of steel connections, including bolted and welded joints
- Implement seismic and fire-resistant design strategies to enhance the safety and resilience of steel structures
- Apply sustainable design practices to minimize the environmental impact of steel construction
Description
This advanced course in steel structure design offers an in-depth exploration of the behavior, analysis, and design of complex steel systems. Participants will gain a strong foundation in the mechanical properties of steel, modeling techniques, and structural analysis methods, including finite element analysis (FEA). Emphasis is placed on the design and performance of steel connections, lateral-torsional buckling, and the structural integrity of crane-supporting girders and plate girders.
In addition to technical rigor, the course emphasizes real-world challenges and evolving demands in steel structure design. Participants will explore how seismic activity and fire exposure influence structural performance and learn to implement design strategies that enhance resilience and safety. Through detailed case studies, students will analyze landmark steel structures, uncover lessons from past projects, and apply critical thinking to complex design scenarios.

FORMATEUR
Dr. Mohamed Khalil has over 20 years of experience in concrete and steel design and is the founder and director/manager of Stenvro Engineering Inc.
He previously worked as a marketing manager for aircraft and aircraft components at Pratt and Whitney Canada and Bombardier Aerospace. At Pratt and Whitney Canada, Dr. Khalil was a specialist in designing critical rotating structures under high and low cycle fatigue loading. He has also been involved in designing many projects for Ford Motor Company, MascoTech Inc., Kobelco Metal Powder of America Inc., and the American Iron and Steel Institute. His projects have included high-rise buildings, underground metro stations, education centers, education residences and steel factories.
Dr. Khalil has instructed many engineering, engineering economics and engineering management courses at educational institutes and universities. A co-author of many technical journal papers, he has delivered scientific and marketing presentations at technical symposiums worldwide. He is also a technical reviewer for international scientific journals.
Dr. Khalil obtained his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo and completed his Master of Business Administration at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
