After participating in this course, you will:

  • develop an understanding of the properties of advanced composite materials, their fabrication procedures, quality control, durability, and methods of installation.
  • recognize the different types of composites and how their applications vary based on their material, adhesive agents, and fibers type and arrangement.
  • analyze and design the concrete structures internally-reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. You will learn about the philosophy behind reinforcing concrete with FRP bars and how it is different than reinforcing concrete with conventional steel bars.
  • use the externally-bonded composites in strengthening concrete structures. You will learn about design methods, installation methods, and measures taken after installation. You will learn how to rationalise the use of composites versus conventional strengthening methods.
  • be familiar with the available codes and guides concerned with composites, with a focus on the Canadian and American codes and guides.

Description
The use of advanced composite materials in construction has been widely accepted as alternative techniques to conventional methods in reinforcing, repairing, and strengthening of reinforced-concrete structures.

This course covers the use of composites in two major applications, namely; 1) reinforcing concrete structures with embedded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars and 2) strengthening reinforced-concrete structures using externally-bonded composites, including the epoxy-based FRP products and the mortar-based composites (widely known as fiber-reinforced cementitious matrices or FRCM).

Introduction to composite materials

  • Use of composites in construction.
  • Manufacturing procedures.
  • Types of composites.
  • Mechanical and design properties of composites.

Codes and guides of structural concrete internally-reinforced with composites

  • Available manuals, design codes, and guidelines.
  • A perspective on the Canadian code development.

Analysis and design of reinforced-concrete structures with composite bars

  • Design concepts and philosophy: How are they different from steel?
  • Design of flexural members (such as slabs and beams) using FRP bars.
  • Design for shear using composite stirrups.
  • Design of axially-loaded members (such as columns) reinforced with composite bars.
  • Serviceability requirements in concrete structures reinforced with composites.
  • Additional topics such as bond behavior, splicing, and detailing.
  • Solved examples, exercises, practical applications, and highlights on previous projects reinforced with composite bars.

 
Day 2

Strengthening of reinforced concrete structures with composites

  • Composites versus traditional strengthening techniques.
  • Composites in strengthening structural concrete: types and applications.
  • The “pros and cons” of composites in strengthening applications.
  • Evaluation of the existing condition of the structure: should composites be used?

Codes and guides of structural concrete externally-reinforced with composites

  • Available manuals, design codes, and guidelines.

Use of externally-bonded composites in strengthening applications

  • Strengthening of flexural-deficient structures: design and analysis methods.
  • Strengthening for shear: design and code requirements.
  • Confinement of axially-loaded members (such as columns) using composites.
  • Measures and code requirements.

Near-surface mounted (NSM) technique

  • Types of NSM systems and their applications.
  • Design philosophy and parameters.
  • Applications to flexural-deficient members.
  • Measures and code requirements.
  • Practical considerations.

Introduction to mortar-based fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM)

  • Types, properties, and design methods of FRCM.

FORMATEUR

Ahmed El Refai, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Ahmed El Refai

Dr. El Refai is an Associate Professor at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. He earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ont., in 2007. His PhD study focused on the use of composites in strengthening damaged reinforced-concrete structures.

Dr. El Refai is a registered professional engineer in Ontario. He has more than 25 years of experience in the structural design of high-rise buildings and bridges in Canada and abroad. He previously worked at Halcrow Inc. where he contributed in the design of multiple iconic projects such as The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. As a member of the R&D group at Halcrow, Dr. El Refai contributed in promoting the use of composites in several projects.

Dr. El Refai’s research interests are in the field of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, with a specific interest in the structural applications of innovative construction and strengthening materials. He has more than 60 technical journal and conference publications, most of which are in the area of composites. He is also a reviewer for several international scientific journals and a member of several technical committees and professional organizations.
