APERÇU

Veuillez noter :
This course is held online over 2 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone):

9:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern (Will include the usual breaks)

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Assess the suitability of shallow foundations for the different loading and soil conditions
  • Identify the different factors affecting the resistance of shallow foundations
  • Understand the procedures to design shallow foundations to withstand compressive, uplift and inclined loads in cohesionless and cohesive soils
  • Carry out structural and geotechnical designs of shallow foundations as per the most commonly used design references in North America, including the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, AASHTO and the Canadian Highway Bridge Code

Description
This course is intended to develop an understanding of the theories and procedures required to design statically loaded shallow foundations. This includes an introduction to the different configurations of shallow foundations, the calculation of the applied pressure, the estimation of the carrying capacity and the evaluation of the following long and short-term settlement components. A preliminary introduction to the mat foundation's design and analysis will also be covered.

The difference between the working stress design and the ultimate limit state approaches will also be discussed, as suggested by North America's most commonly adopted design manuals. The structural design of shallow foundations and some special design and loading conditions will be covered. Finally, several design examples will be discussed, covering the typical soil and loading conditions.

Course Outline

  • Background and introduction
  • Design of shallow foundations - bearing capacity
  • Design of shallow foundations - settlements
  • Structural design of shallow foundations
  • Design Approach
  • Special design cases
  • Design examples

FORMATEUR

Meckkey El-Sharnouby, PhD, P.Eng.

Dr. Meckkey El-Sharnouby is a Principal Engineer at Atlantic Industries Limited and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. El-Sharnouby has been developing and designing geostructural systems for over 15 years. His expertise includes underground structures, marine terminal infrastructure, linear infrastructure, surface mining, machine foundations, geodynamic engineering, computational geomechanics and sustainability. He was recently involved in designing and constructing the largest span buried structure, which earned a Guinness World Record in the UAE.

His global expertise extends from North America, South America, and the Middle East to New Zealand. Dr. Meckkey earned his master’s and Ph.D. from Western University, authored several publications and presented at numerous international conferences. He is involved in developing MSE walls and buried bridge sections in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA-S6-19 and 24).
