Veuillez noter :
This course is held online over 1 day on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone):

10:00 am to 3:00 pm Eastern (Will include two 15-minute breaks)

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn what causes the formation of potholes under different pavement settings, from rural roads to urban freeways
  • Get expert-level insights into materials used for pothole repairs
  • Achieve confidence in selecting different pothole repair products and technologies tailored to a different network or project-specific needs.
  • Enhance your skills in managing pothole repairs proactively and increasing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in executing maintenance programs

Description
Asphalt pavements are an important infrastructure asset for road agencies in terms of political and financial impacts on an annual budget. Potholes are among the most frequent distresses observed for asphalt pavements, especially those located within an urban setting. This type of distress is the bane of drivers and maintenance agencies across Canada. If not properly fixed, potholes could progressively worsen over a short period of time and allow more water to infiltrate the underlain layers, causing more significant damage to the pavement structure. The damage could form irregularities that could quickly become a safety hazard for the travelling public.

This course will examine the evolution of pothole formation under different traffic and climate settings. Technical background information will be provided on the nature of materials used for pothole patching and how this understanding can be tailored to various types of potholes and loadings (traffic and climate) in specifying longer-lasting repair materials. Other variables, such as production, transportation and placement of pothole materials, will be discussed to provide a holistic view of the life cycle of pothole repair materials and how variables in each stage could impact the durability and intended life.

Finally, this course provides different asset management techniques (manual and automatic) for detecting potholes in a timely manner and use proactively in budgeting and managing material procurement on the project or network level.

10:00 am to 3:00 pm Eastern (Will include two 15-minute breaks)

Key Understanding Why Potholes Form and Need for Repair Using Appropriate Durable Materials

  • Overview of pavement types (flexible, rigid, and composite)
  • Overview of pavement management and the need for periodic and scheduled maintenance
  • Proactive versus reactive maintenance and pavement management
  • Pothole types and repair needs
  • Material design and tailoring to different pothole types and pavement types

Repair Planning from Material Selection to Placement

  • Material specifications and procurement
  • Concept of Cost-to-benefit ratio in material selection
  • Equipment and technologies for placement
  • Planning for systematic Field performance review and incorporating Continuous Improvement (CI) in material specifications and procurement.

Maintenance Scheduling

  • Reactive pothole locating – manual survey versus app-based or semi-automated surveys
  • Proactive pothole locating – utilizing asset management outcomes in predicting pothole locations and density at network-level
  • Repair scheduling, network-level approach vs project-based and reactive vs proactive

FORMATEUR

Mehran Kafi Farashah, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Mehran Kafi Farashah has over 10 years of extensive experience in transportation and infrastructure asset management in the municipal sector. His expertise includes developing asset management plans, climate change adaptation, pavement design and material, asset valuation, data collection, condition assessment guidelines, pavement lifecycle cost analysis, asset condition prediction models, and risk-based planning and decision-making techniques to extend asset service life.

Dr. Farashah has led numerous research projects, such as developing and assessing new pavement structures and materials, evaluating pavement performance using both destructive and non-destructive methods, examining pavement preservation techniques, and utilizing instrumentation to monitor pavement behaviour. He has also presented and published several papers on asset management and pavement-related topics.

Sina Varamini, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Sina Varamini has more than 10 years of experience working closely with different stakeholders within the road and airfield construction industry in the development and implementation of pavement solutions.

Dr. Varamini's expertise covers all aspects of pavements, including the design of new and rehabilitated pavement structures (highways, airfields, and seaports), construction, instrumentation, condition assessments, structural evaluation, subsurface investigations, and forensic evaluation, as well as the development of asset management programs.
