APERÇU
After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Apply structural analysis methods to beams, trusses, slabs, columns, walls, frames, footings, and pile foundations
- Assess the design of reinforced concrete and structural steel members
- Solve common structural engineering problems
- Employ wood and masonry design procedures
Description
Non-structural engineers and architects need a basic understanding of structural engineering. This course provides the fundamentals without delving into complicated mathematical formulas. The course covers the design and construction of concrete, steel, wood, and masonry building structures.
Simple hands-on exercises and problem-solving sessions will follow lectures.
Course Outline
- Structural loads & procedures
- Structural analysis
- Member properties
- Structural behaviour
- Reinforced concrete design
- Structural steel design
- Wood design
- Masonry design
- Building design sample
Who Should Attend
Architects • Non-Structural Engineers (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Mining, Chemical & Agricultural) • Plant Engineers • Fabricators & Manufacturers of Structural Systems • General Contractors • Property Managers • Directors of Physical Plants • Municipal Building Officials • Building Inspectors • Field Review Personnel • Project Engineers • Others wanting to know more about Structural Systems
Special Features & Requirements
Course participants are expected to have some elementary knowledge of structural design and the analysis of simple structures.
In order to gain the maximum benefit from this seminar, participants are encouraged to read the following texts in advance:
- Part 4 of the National Building Code of Canada
- Structural Commentaries (Part 4) of the National Building Code of Canada
Participants should have a hand-held, battery-operated calculator for the exercises at the end of each day.
9:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern (Will include the usual breaks)
Please note that it is a requirement for all attendees to sign a "Confidentiality Agreement" prior to receiving the course notes for this online offering.

FORMATEUR

Dr. Mohamed Khalil has over 20 years of experience in concrete and steel design and is the founder and director/manager of Stenvro Engineering Inc.
He previously worked as a marketing manager for aircraft and aircraft components at Pratt and Whitney Canada and Bombardier Aerospace. At Pratt and Whitney Canada, Dr. Khalil was a specialist in designing critical rotating structures under high and low cycle fatigue loading. He has also been involved in designing many projects for Ford Motor Company, MascoTech Inc., Kobelco Metal Powder of America Inc., and the American Iron and Steel Institute. His projects have included high-rise buildings, underground metro stations, education centers, education residences and steel factories.
Dr. Khalil has instructed many engineering, engineering economics and engineering management courses at educational institutes and universities. A co-author of many technical journal papers, he has delivered scientific and marketing presentations at technical symposiums worldwide. He is also a technical reviewer for international scientific journals.
Dr. Khalil obtained his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo and completed his Master of Business Administration at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
