  • Describe the potential benefits and cautionary action that may be required when using waste and by-product materials
  • Identify essential issues and inspection and testing tasks to maximize the successful use of wastes and by-products

Agencies worldwide have long permitted the use of wastes and other by-products in roadway construction. Some of these products are intended to improve the pavement or subgrade materials' performance, while others are used to reduce the cost of higher-valued materials. Some agencies embrace the use of waste and by-product materials as contributing to the sustainability of our infrastructure and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while others refer to their use in roadways as linear landfill. 

This webinar provides examples of waste and by-product use and a history of their performance for various roadway applications. Advantages and disadvantages of using each type of product and some guidance for successfully designing and constructing each. 

Course Outline
This webinar outlines the history and use of waste and by-product materials used in the construction of pavements. This includes a wide range of products such as lignosulfonates, environmentally friendly plant-based resins, cement and lime materials for the stabilization of subgrades, crushed glass, recycled concrete and asphalt, bailed tires, recycled plastics, shredded tires, construction demolition waste and lightweight aggregates for base and subbase and recycled concrete and asphalt, glass, steel and blast furnace slags, waste shingles, engine oil, asbestos and ground rubber for pavement surface materials.

David Hein, P.Eng

David is a consulting Civil Engineer with over 38 years of experience in designing, evaluating and managing transportation infrastructure. He is the past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation and Development Institute (ASCE T&DI), chair of the Workforce Development and Codes and Standards Councils and chair of 5 engineering standards committees. He is a long-term member of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), Past-Chair of the pavements committee and member of the Soils and Materials and Asset Management Committees.

He is also a member of the Workforce Development Council and Chair of the Professional Development Committee. He is also a past member of the Transportation Research Board pavement management, pavement maintenance and pavement preservation committees. He has represented Canada on the World Road Association (WRA) pavements and asset management committees since 2002 and is currently the Chair of the Canadian National Committee to the WRA. He recently stepped down after 10 years as Executive Director of the Falling Weight Deflectometer User Group.

He has been involved in numerous national and international research, evaluation and asset management projects for Federal, State, Provincial and Municipal agencies and many of the public/private/ partnership highway construction projects across Canada and the United States.
