Description
Understanding the fundamentals of electricity is essential for anyone involved in the power industry, even if they don't have an electrical engineering background. This course delves into the basic principles of electricity, explaining how electric power systems are structured and how they function. You will explore key concepts such as voltage, current, and frequency and gain insights into DC and AC systems. The course also covers power generation using different energy sources like thermal, hydro, and nuclear and explains the significance of active and reactive power in maintaining system stability.

Participants will learn about the configuration of power systems, including single—and three-phase power, and the importance of balancing these systems. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the functions of various power system components in substations and how these are depicted in Single-Line Diagrams (SLDs). The course also explains active and reactive power, power system losses and balanced and unbalanced powers.

FORMATEUR

Amitabha Gangopadhyay, P Eng

Amitabha Gangopadhyay, M.Eng., P.Eng, is well recognized in power system engineering, where he has made many contributions to a wide range of power system applications during the past 35 years.

Prior to pursuing higher studies in Canada, Amitabha worked in the utility industry and with English Electric in India. In Canada, Amitabha has worked with Group Schneider, Global Thermoelectric, Fuel Cell Energy and SNC Lavalin in many areas of power system engineering. Currently, Amitabha works in regulatory matters related to the electric reliability of bulk power systems in North America.

His areas of interest are electrical transmission and distribution, protection and smart grid applications. Amitabha holds a Master's Degree from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has published several papers in international journals and conferences.

Amitabha is a professional engineer in the province of Alberta.
