Recent advances in technology & sophistication in hardware & software, have made it possible to design & build more effective & reliable traffic signals & traffic signal systems. Expectation of better service in local areas is increasing as more motorists experience the newer & more effective traffic signal systems. Consequently, many transportation authorities are faced with the demands, not only for additional traffic signals, but also for upgrade of the existing traffic signal systems to meet increased traffic flows & safety concerns.

Design Exercise
An intersection plan is provided to pairs or groups of participants. Each pair or group will be required to create a signal design considering the geometrics. Geometric alterations, above ground and underground plant placement to reflect phasing requirements are to be considered in this exercise. All required knowledge to complete this exercise will have been addressed throughout the workshop.

Design Review
Each group will present their design speaking to the decisions made and the design approach that they have chosen. After all presentations have been made, the actual “in place” design will be reviewed.

Michael Flanigan

Michael B. Flanigan is a Project Manager with the Traffic Management Section of the Transportation and Works Department for the City of Mississauga. He has over 40 years of experience in Municipal Traffic Engineering, Operations, Planning and Design especially in the area of Traffic Signal Control. He is a Past President of IMSA Ontario and IMSA International, and serves on a number of IMSA International Committees. Michael represents IMSA in a number of capacities at the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC).
